Minor in Translation Studies

The Minor in Translation Studies provides an option to undergraduates who have an advanced knowledge of foreign languages and an interest in translation, either as a profession or as an area of academic research.

Admission Requirements:

Students are expected to have an adequate written command of English, into which they will generally be required to translate, as well as a near-native command of a second language, which will generally be their source language.

Languages Offered:

TRIP has been able to offer translation practice from Spanish and French on a regular basis. Depending on need and availability, translation instruction involving other source languages (Arabic, Italian, Portuguese, German, Korean, and Russian) may be offered. Those interested in other languages, are advised to contact the TRIP Co-directors to check whether instruction is available in a given semester.

Course Requirements:

• Translation Workshop - Literary (TRIP 472, 4 credits or a cross listed equivalent)
• Translation Workshop - Non-Literary (TRIP 473, 4 credits or a cross listed equivalent)
• Two introductory courses on- Translation Studies (TRIP 460 and 461, 4 credits each).
• Two semesters of upper-level courses (at the 300 or 400 level) directly related to the source language chosen by the student (4 credits each). For example, a student interested in translating from French might take FREN 341, FREN 344, FREN 362 or FREN 461.

Total number of credits: 24

In order to qualify for the minor, students must earn a grade of B or higher in each of the courses required.
